Data Mural and Data Therapy in Brazil
Rahul and I were invited down to Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais, Brazil by the Office of Strategic Priorities, department of the Minas Gerais State Government to lead a data mural process and a series of data therapy workshops. After a whirlwind week we’re back and excited about what we were able to do! The workshops were fun, with lots of interest from entrepreneurs, journalists, educators and government officials about creative ways to present data. But the data mural process was the most fun and engaging of all of the events we ran. An alternative technical High School called Plug Minas that focuses on technology and the arts hoped that the mural would help to bridge the divide between the students in different programs within the school, would help to build connections with the community outside the school’s walls, and would provide students and staff with a new set of skills. Thanks to exhausting translation during energetic design discussions and great help with ladders, tents and supplies, we painted a vibrant mural that shows the process of transformation that Plug Minas students go through while they’re at the school, leaving as better people with a greater understanding and appreciation of diversity.
The school’s film students prepared a short video of the process!
